My piece for London mural festival has been inspired by the context of the area, Ladbroke grove. Claudia Jones, who dedicated her life to the fight against intolerance, inequality, and oppression. Jones founded the west Indian gazette in 1958, britain’s first black newspaper, being a firm believer that ‘a peoples art is the genesis of their freedom” she suggested a Caribbean carnival to uplift the growing community celebrating its culture and heritage, following the trouble of the riots. This went on to become an outside event, now known as Nottinghill carnival.
